World Engineering Day, DHLTU

The Faculty of Engineering of the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, hosted an engaging and insightful programme under the theme: “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalisation”. The event brought together faculty members, student engineers, and distinguished guests in a shared commitment to exploring how engineering can shape a resilient, inclusive, and technology-driven future.

Delivering the Keynote Address, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Baba Insah emphasized the strategic role of engineering in national development. He noted that innovation and digitalisation are no longer optional enhancements but essential tools for sustainable progress. Encouraging both students and lecturers to embrace emerging technologies, research, and stronger industry collaboration, he challenged the Faculty to remain forward-thinking and solution-oriented in preparing engineers for a rapidly evolving world.

An address on the theme was presented by the Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) who also doubles as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ing. Prof. Patick Bowan. He highlighted that the theme draws attention to the critical role engineering plays in achieving the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He said engineers are at the forefront of designing practical, scalable, and sustainable solutions to pressing global challenges, including climate change, infrastructure deficits, energy access, and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Bowan outlined five key actionable areas to guide engineering practice and education: promoting sustainability and the circular economy; driving digital transformation through smart systems and emerging technologies; advancing inclusivity and diversity within the profession; strengthening global collaboration; and embracing a decisive call to action that prioritizes measurable impact. He encouraged students to become “hybrid thinkers”, engineers who combine strong technical foundations with digital competence, systems thinking, and environmental responsibility. He urged students to master digital tools such as digital twins, seek hands-on industry experience, and cultivate green thinking to ensure sustainability remains central to their innovations.

A goodwill message from the President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering was conveyed to participants, highlighting the institution’s steadfast commitment to professional excellence, ethical standards, and continuous capacity building. The message encouraged students to uphold integrity, pursue lifelong learning, and position themselves as innovative problem-solvers in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

The programme was reflective, inspiring, and served as a powerful reminder that smart engineering, grounded in innovation, digitalisation, and sustainability, is essential to building a better future. It called on the next generation of engineers to think critically, act responsibly, and lead boldly in advancing sustainable development.
